Acrylic Painting 101: A Beginner's Guide

If you're interested in trying your hand at acrylic painting, you're in luck! Acrylics are a great medium for beginners because they dry quickly, are easy to clean up, and are very forgiving. With a few basic materials and some basic lessons, you'll be on your way to creating beautiful paintings in no time.

Basic materials

To get started with acrylic painting, you'll need a few basic materials:

Brushes: You'll need a variety of brushes to create different effects in your paintings. Look for brushes with synthetic bristles, as they are more durable and easier to clean than natural bristle brushes. Some good brushes to start with include round brushes for detailed work, flat brushes for broad strokes, and filbert brushes for soft, rounded edges.

Canvas: Canvas is a popular support for acrylic paintings, as it allows the paint to adhere well and creates a texture that is ideal for many techniques. You can purchase pre-stretched canvas or stretch your own over a wooden frame.

Paints: Acrylic paints are water-soluble, but dry quickly to a water-resistant finish. They come in a wide range of colors and can be mixed to create an endless variety of shades. It's a good idea to start with a basic set of primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and white, as these can be mixed to create a wide range of other colors.

But on my specific tutorials I used 5 limited colors

  • Titanium white
  • Phthalo blue / Primary blue / Any blue closer to primary
  • Brilliant Red / Any red closer to primary
  • Primary Yellow / Medium Yellow / Hanza Yellow / Any yellow closer to primary
  • Raw Umber / Burnt Umber

Brands:

  • Liquitex Basics
  • Reeves
  • Pebeo Opaque and
  • Sakura
  • My favorites are sakura opaque and pebeo opaque.

Basic lessons

Before you start painting, it's helpful to learn some basic techniques:

Color mixing: To create new colors, you'll need to mix your paints. The primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) can be mixed to create a wide range of other colors. For example, red and yellow make orange, red and blue make purple, and blue and yellow make green. You can also mix in white to create lighter shades, or black to create darker shades.

Blending: Blending is the process of creating a smooth transition between two colors. To blend acrylic paints, you'll need to work quickly as the paint dries quickly. You can use a brush or a palette knife to mix the colors together on the canvas, or use a wet brush to blend the colors together as you paint.

Lights and shadows: Lights and shadows are important for creating the illusion of depth and form in a painting. To create the effect of light and shadow, you'll need to pay attention to the way that light falls on your subject. Use lighter colors to indicate areas that are hit by light, and darker colors to indicate areas in shadow.

Color matching: If you're painting from a reference photo or still life, you'll need to match the colors as closely as possible. To do this, you'll need to pay attention to the way that colors interact with each other and the effect that different lighting conditions have on the colors.

How to paint sky and clouds

To paint a realistic sky and clouds, you'll need to pay attention to the way that light and color change throughout the day. Here's how to get started:

Choose your colors: For a clear blue sky, you'll need a light blue paint. For clouds, you'll need a range of whites and grays.

Paint the sky first: Start by painting the sky in the background. Use a flat brush to apply broad strokes of light blue paint across the canvas.

Add the clouds: Next, add the clouds. Use a round brush and a mixture of white and graypaints to create the clouds. Work quickly as you paint, blending the colors together to create a soft, fluffy effect. To create the illusion of depth, use lighter colors for the clouds in the distance and darker colors for the clouds in the foreground.

Finish with details: To finish your sky and clouds painting, you can add some final details like shadows or reflections. Use a small brush and a mixture of blue and gray to add shadows to the clouds, or use a mixture of white and blue to create reflections on the water below.
